I Trash, Therefore I Exist

I was at the SOS Music Festival last weekend at the Chinese Garden, and maaan, I gotta tell ya, we are incorrigible.

First of all, we really have a talent for messing up good things. I mean, seriously, I attended the first SOS Music Festival that was held in September if I remember correctly, and it was great.
Organization was good, sponsors were doing a good job, music was nice, and the crowd was having a good time.

But we had to go screw it up...

Organizers got a little cocky i guess... as a lot of things just didnt make sense.
For instance, they decided to move the entrance, instead of building it at the passageway leading into the garden, they built it right in the middle of plants. So people going in had to walk all over the plants, ruining them. Not to mention tripping over them.

Walking in, i felt like i was walking into a big garbage dump. Not a single trash can in sight, and the grass is covered in trash; food remains, plastic bags, sandwich wrapping paper, cans, plastic water bottles...

Having to work that day, i havent had a thing to eat. And knowing from previous experience that there are many caterers and fast food joints set up there, i didnt worry.
Big mistake. apparently, one restaurant insisted on taking an exclusive deal on catering. You'd think they'd have multiple boothes dispersed all over the place, to serve this huge crowd.
Wrong again. One booth, serving a crowd of over 15000 people. I was fishing for old sweets and gum in my handbag to ease the hunger wrenching my tummy.
Mind you, i'd rather starve than stand in endless line where people push and shove and cut in in front of you. And my bad luck always insures that there's a stinky guy standing right in front of me.
Thanks, but no thanks. I'd rather starve.

Then the hosts. Oh the hosts.
Someone came up with the idea that they needed to have someone introduce the bands. Fine. So they got a couple of - supposedly - famous TV hosts, to introduce each band and entertain people while the bands are setting up their instruments.

Oh boy... I'd wished i had a shotgun in my hand, one that'll make a big messy wound, and splatter blood all over. That's how funny they were.

And the cigarette sponsors... The whole world is banning tobacco advertising, and smoking. And we're still dressing up girls in sequine and tight jeans, with trays loaded with cigarettes for sale.
Our youth's health is ruined enough as it is with pollution and shisha, do we have to do our best to completely destroy it!?

Ok, i'm a little mean. A tad harsh, i give you that. Definitely not the nicest person in the world.

But we really do have a knack for killing a good thing. It wouldnt hurt if we preserve our good ideas and focus on offering them the best possible way, instead of getting greedy and ambitious, and expanding beyond our means and capabilities.

Now, you can RUN and HIDE!!

Now, you can RUN and HIDE!!

Last month in my article about Bit Torrent, how it works, and how to get started with it, I mentioned that that the MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of America) and the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) are trying as hard as they could possibly try (legally and illegally that is) to push law makers to pass laws prohibiting music swapping, online radios, and anything that doesn’t bring in money into their own pockets, why? Beats me!! Anyway, the legal battles are yet to be over; still both parties are looking beyond the US borders, why again? Well, although the US market is enough to soup-up their money making machines, they want the whole cake baby and the whole world is one damn big cake. The new approach both parties are using outside the US borders while working on the legal battles in US courts is threatening ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) with whatever just to get them to pass over the fear to their clients, why? Well, they believe that scaring people would boost CD sales, and that scared internet users who fear being sued by them would go watch movies in theaters instead of downloading them.

How it all works?

Lets say you start a movie download using one of the peer-to-peer clients (Kazza, Imesh, emule….etc), regardless of the program you are using or the network your client connects to, your client has to connect to other computers belonging to other people that have part or whole of the movie you’re trying to get for you to download that movie, and the same happens when someone is getting a file that you happen to have shared; in this whole process of uploading/downloading, an experienced person could track back the connections made to his/her PC whether its an upload and/or download back to the remote PC (that could be you) now the MPAA, and RIAA utilize either their own IT staff, companies that work in both fields (such as Fonoun-Net Movies productions here in Egypt), and/or outsource to companies that specialize in tracking people who share files online. Once they trace back to the user they start probing their pc to find as much info as possible to be able to sue them (US and European citizens mostly) or simply threaten the ISP with whatever for the ISP to pass down the threat to the user (mostly threatening to shut down your ADSL). Already a fellow geek told me that he got one of those phone calls from his ISP. Trust me the ISP’s don’t do it willingly because the more people download the more bandwidth they sell so unless the ISP is being absolutely cornered, you won’t get that phone call, no one like scaring off their clients!!

Slipping under the radar

Now for the MPAA, RIAA, or one of their affiliates to trace you back and start collecting info about you to be able to figure out your ISP, and who you are to at least report you to the ISP, they need to run into you first, either by you sharing a file, or by you downloading from one of the pc’s they use to hunt file sharers; not sharing files is one solution (but do you really think I spent the whole night typing this article to tell you that!!). without getting into great detail of how the internet works, the folks who track you down work within companies, these companies do have internet connections with multiple ISP’s, because of the way the internet works, these people are assigned a fixed address block (aka IP address space) that identifies them online exactly the same way you are when you are online (the hunter becomes the hunted). Now that imagine having a list of all their address spaces and checking all outgoing/incoming connections and blocking all connections to/from those address spaces (yes sir you guessed right) you would have become absolutely invisible, you would literally be choosing who to actually connect to and who not to connect to; the other great thing about having such power is to minimize the amount of corrupted music and movies you download (yes the files these guys share are corrupted just to make your life miserable) so by filtering them out you secure yourself and increase your odds of getting the right complete files you went through the effort to download.

The radar Jammer

Doing the whole process of filtering the connections you make so you won’t connect to one of the pc’s used by these guys is way beyond what even the most experienced computer user is capable of, not because its hard, on the contrary, its very simple but the amount of connections, the rate you switch between peers for a single file, and the amount of incoming connections is just too much. Now a bunch of nice folks came up with a really good idea, a program that runs in the background checking every outgoing, and incoming connection to make sure your computer is not connecting to or being connected to by one those machines that would tack you down. These little pieces of software come with a built in list that includes all the address spaces of such companies and banns any connection if it matches one of the address within its list, even better, these little buggers do check for an updated list every now and then just like your antivirus does (I guess the analogy goes beyond the antivirus!!), making sure you are up to date. I have checked a couple of them so far and they have been working great (Peer Guardian, and Proton Wall). One of the best things about these guys is that they tell you how many connections (incoming or outgoing) were blocked, you would be amazed by the numbers. The whole coolest thing is that the lists generated for the program to use is compiled from the finding of people who actually track down the IP’s (address spaces) of these tracking machines/companies and everyone is welcome to help out, it’s a way of giving back to the community if you like what they are doing and would like to help them out. Of course these software’s are Open Source and follow the GPL license body (in other words they are FREE)

The internet is a universe by its own, its far from safe, and what you don’t know will still get you. Peer guardians will protect you from the MPAA and RIAA folks but they won’t block other internet threats (worms, hackers …..Etc) don’t confuse them with personal firewalls, they run alongside with personal firewalls (such as Sygate, Norton Internet security suite …..etc) but they won’t take their place.

Watching the World Cup online "FREE"

I'm not really a soccer fan but I decided since the local cable/sat broadcaster is charging a hefty ransom of $150 just to take a look at what's going in the world's cup (which was previously around $20), and definitely because I'm not the type that likes to be black-mailed into paying up for services, I fired up my browser and went for the online hunt using google for a shotgun; here is what I found. www.sopcast.org offers a P2P TV program for free download which lets you linkup to one of many listed channels who were setup by other people using their home modest links; the whole genius idea is that when anyone decides to share a channel on sopcast, they don't really need to have a huge upstream link to the internet, all they need is enough BandWidth for one or two connections max, how? Well it works just like bittorrent, emule...Etc. You the watcher connect to a mesh of people and you get pieces of the stream from each computer throughout the mesh and when that is done you get a complete stream, the greater the number of people who connect to one another in the mesh, the faster things get, and the better stream quality(everyone is a receiver and a broadcaster at the same time). It's a fairly new concept but its definitely kick ass. Another choice I found based on the same Principal is PPStream
which I didn't get a chance to try but read some good feedback on. The busiest the better from my point, so whatever the app is, the number of people using it is what actually should drive your decision making.

Killer Quickfix

We live in a culture of quickfix; we never tackle the real problem and solve it once and for all. We always look only at the symptoms and deal with them as if they were the only problem we have, completely failing to see the real issue at hand.

Got a problem at work? Look for a quick coverup for the bad smell, not the source of the stink. Got a weight problem? Starve yourself for a month, then go back to your bad eating habits and sedentary activity level.
Having relationship issues? Go look for a side fling, without confronting your issues and solving them, or even ending the relationship if it's not working anymore.

Quickfixes are what will kill us eventually, if they arent already started.

Why is it so hard for us to tackle real problems? When will we have the guts to look them in the eye, and tell them "I know you exist, I'm not afraid of you, I will figure you out"?

Eating Juice & Drinking cookies

Today on the drive to work from Mohandesine over to Masr-El-Gedida the traffic sucked beyond the normal, which is of course weird....I'm used to a certain level of "suckiness" that I believe is on the threshold of acceptable...Forget the daily dose of traffic crap.....Now on both sides of the road you could see a long black line of uniform policemen stretched along a really huge distance (a couple of thousand at least); I see them on my way every now and then whenever the president decides to go for a ride anywhere, so the sight of them wasn't of any interest; what really grabbed my attention were the juice , and the cookie packs, each recruit held one in each hand and stood there with his back facing the street, eating their cookies, having a sip every now and then; knowing the way things work here, they probably had a couple die from heat strokes, and decided to get creative, next was the inception of the juice/cookies idea. Hold on one sec here please, its a toasty 37C degrees out there today, and its one of the highest polluted cities in the world, you have someone dressed in black, dehydrated, unarmed, busy eating/drinking, oh and they really don't look like they give a crap about what happens in the street; anyone ever wondered why the hell do that in the first place? What use would it serve to have a couple thousand of them stretched along side the road every now and then whenever "HE" decides to go on a ride.
